Case Study

Colorado School of Mines Survey Field

The first step in determining whether Zonal Kriging should be used is to examine the raw data. Is there reason to believe there maybe multiple zones. If there is, can it be proved?

STEP #1: Look at the regional geology. Display any field data. Try separating the raw data into distinct zones.

STEP #2: Can you find a statistical difference between the populations in each zone? Try using a histogram frequency distribution.

STEP #3: Are the spatial statistics (semivariogram models) significantly different?
If you meet these conditions, you may want to consider zonal kriging. There are other reasons too, but they will not be addressed here.
STEP #4: Define the model zones and the zone interrelationships.
